Job Description

Position Title: Health and Safety Officer, Human Resource ServicesWork Location: Aurora Education Centre, 60 Wellington St. W., Aurora, L4G 3H2Salary: $67,552 - $76,031Number of positions: 1Application Deadline: December 9, 2020Interested candidates are required to complete the following on-line application to the attention of: The Recruitment Team. This term position is effective immediately and will end on or about August 31, 2021.The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for assisting the Health and Safety Manager in planning, developing and maintaining comprehensive health and safety programs, training and services by providing advice and participating in the development, implementation and monitoring programs, Board policies and procedures and guidelines in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WSIA, and other related Codes or Regulations.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:To evaluate and monitor school/site/Board compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related Regulations, including inspecting Board facilities arising from worker concerns, work refusals, accidents and incidents.To meet, consult and liaise with internal and external working groups on health & safety requirements and act as a resource for school Administrators, department managers, employees and health and safety committees.To test, monitor and report on building environment and working conditions, such as indoor air quality, sound levels, particulate levels in the air, extreme temperature changes, electromagnetic radiation levels, etc.To visit all Board site to perform work space assessments, review ergonomic requirements related to job functions and to recommend replacement equipment and changes to methods and physical motions to reduce physical injury.To research and monitor pertinent legislation, codes for updates, changes or new developments in health & safety.To liaise with outside government agencies or their agents such as local fire departments, Ministry of Labour, York Region Health Services, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of the Environment as required.To develop, coordinate and deliver training on WHMIS, Occupational Health & Safety and any other related health & safety practices; including the developing and maintaining related materials.To develop, write and distribute health & safety correspondence as required.To attend, advise and provide consultation to all Board JOSHCs on matters arising during the meetings and the mandated requirements of committee as indicated by legislation.To perform other duties as assigned.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:A three year university degree or college diploma in health and safety/human resources or a related discipline is required.Minimum five years health & safety or related experience is required.Effective verbal and written communication, interpersonal and strong computer skills are required.Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required.Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have access to own transportation.Equity, Diversity and Inclusion StatementThe York Region District School Board (YRDSB) believes in giving each and every applicant an equal opportunity to succeed on their own merit and we strive to hire staff that reflect and support the diverse perspectives, experiences and needs of our students and our communities.
